Balayage, Highlights or Full Colour? A Guide to Hair Colour
Hair colour is one of those decisions that looks simple from the outside and turns out to be anything but. Balayage, highlights, full colour, toner, gloss, root touch-up. The terms get used interchangeably and they shouldn’t, because each one does a different thing to your hair and suits a different person.
This is the plain-English guide we’d love every new colour client to read before they sit down for a consultation. What each colour technique actually is, who it suits, how often it needs refreshing, and how to pick the right one. As a L’Oréal Professional Salon, we work across the brand’s full colour portfolio, so the recommendations here reflect what we actually deliver day to day. Bodies like the Fellowship for British Hairdressing publish standards-led guidance on colour technique too, which we’d always point to as useful background reading.
Why hair colour is more than one decision
The first thing worth knowing is that “hair colour” isn’t a single service. It’s a category that covers permanent colour, demi-permanent colour, lightening, toning and glossing, all of which can be applied with different techniques. Balayage, highlights and full colour are application methods, not colour systems. The conversation in your consultation is really two questions: what finished result do you want, and which application method gets you there.
“Most hair colour regrets come from skipping the consultation. The technique, the formula and the schedule have to match the hair you actually have, not the photo you’ve saved.”
Full colour
Full hair colour is the most uniform result. A single tone applied across the head, from root to tip, giving an even, all-over hair colour. Within full colour there are permanent options like Majirel and ammonia-free options like INOA, plus demi-permanent options like Dia Light for softer, lower-commitment colour change.
Best for: grey coverage, dramatic colour change, a consistent tone from root to tip. Refresh: root touch-up every 4 to 6 weeks for permanent hair colour, longer for demi-permanent. Time in chair: 90 minutes to 2 hours.
Highlights
Highlights are sectioned pieces of hair lifted to a brighter shade than the base, applied using foils that work close to the root. They give a much more defined, structured colour pattern than balayage, with brighter pieces visible throughout the hair. Half-head highlights focus on the top and front, full-head highlights work through the entire head.
Best for: uniform brightness, a defined “blonded” finished result, clients who like a clear regrowth line. Refresh: every 8 to 12 weeks, often with a toner in between. Time in chair: 2 to 3 hours.
Balayage
Balayage is freehand painted hair colour, applied to the surface of the hair to create a soft, natural, sun-kissed effect. The depth and starting point of the lightening varies through the head, so balayage grows out more gracefully than highlights. It’s usually paired with a gloss or toner at the basin to set the final tone.
Best for: a low-maintenance hair colour look, soft natural finish, clients who don’t want a visible regrowth line. Refresh: every 12 to 16 weeks, often with a gloss in between. Time in chair: 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
Toners and gloss services
Toners and gloss services aren’t a full hair colour change. They’re tonal refreshes that sit over existing colour, correcting brassiness, adding shine and refining the finish. Dia Light is the demi-permanent system we use most often for this kind of in-between hair colour refresh.
Best for: refreshing a balayage between full appointments, correcting brassiness, adding shine. Refresh: every 4 to 8 weeks. Time in chair: 30 to 60 minutes.
How to pick the right technique
The right technique comes down to lifestyle, maintenance tolerance and the look you’re after. Here’s the broad guide.
"I want grey coverage."
Full permanent hair colour with Majirel or ammonia-free INOA, refreshed every 4 to 6 weeks at the root. The most reliable colour route for grey.
"I want bright, even blonde."
Full-head highlights, refreshed every 8 to 12 weeks with a toner in between. Higher commitment, but the most uniform blonde result.
"I want low-maintenance lightness."
Balayage with a gloss finish. Grows out softly, refreshed every 12 to 16 weeks. The most natural-looking hair colour with the longest gap between appointments.
"I want a refresh, not a change."
A toner or Dia Light gloss between bigger appointments. Quickest colour appointment in the menu, and the easiest to fit in.
How often each hair colour needs refreshing
Refresh schedules are one of the most-asked questions and one of the most-misunderstood. Here’s a realistic guide based on average growth and how each hair colour technique grows out.
Root Touch-Up (Full Colour)
Permanent colour clients with grey coverage. Regrowth at the root is the trigger, and the schedule is consistent across the year.
Highlights
Half- or full-head highlights, refreshed when the regrowth line becomes visible. Often paired with a toner at the in-between visit.
Balayage
Soft, painted hair colour grows out so gracefully that the gap can stretch this far. A gloss in between keeps the tone fresh.
Toners & Gloss
The in-between refresh. Slots into the schedule of any larger colour appointment to keep the finish looking new.
The consultation comes first
Whichever hair colour technique you’re drawn to, the consultation is the part that makes it work. We’ll look at your hair’s current condition, any previous colour history, the tone you want, and whether a Metal Detox pre-treatment is needed before lightening. For first-time colour clients an Allergy Alert Test is required 48 hours before the appointment.
Our hair team works across the full L’Oréal Professionnel system including Majirel, INOA, Dia Light, Série Expert and Metal Detox. If you’d like to read more about what that designation means, our piece on being a L’Oréal Professional Salon covers it in detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Balayage is hand-painted hair colour applied freehand to the surface of the hair, giving a soft, natural, sun-kissed result. Highlights are sectioned and foiled, lifting hair colour in defined pieces from much closer to the root. Balayage tends to grow out more gracefully; highlights give more uniform brightness.
It depends on the technique. Full hair colour and root touch-ups are typically every 4 to 6 weeks. Highlights every 8 to 12 weeks. Balayage every 12 to 16 weeks, often with a gloss or toner refresh in between. A consultation will set the right schedule for your colour.
Professional hair colour applied by a trained stylist using salon-grade products is far gentler than at-home colour. We use L’Oréal Professionnel systems including ammonia-free options like INOA, and Metal Detox pre-treatments to protect the hair during lightening.
Yes, but it usually needs a consultation first. Box dye can leave build-up and metal residue in the hair that affects how new colour develops. We’ll often start with a Metal Detox treatment and may stage the transition across more than one appointment.
Yes, for any first-time colour client an Allergy Alert Test (skin test) is required at least 48 hours before your appointment. This is manufacturer safety guidance and applies to all professional colour services.
